If I wasn’t already glad Arlen Specter defected, I definitely would be now

Just to prevent history rewriting itself (so to speak) I have below a screen capture, from the website “specterforthecure” which is Arlen Specter’s re-election campaign page.  But it doesn’t seem to be an Arlen Specter re-election page.  Not really.  It seems to be a page soliciting funds to find a cure.

Well, here, you read it:

Note, please, that I have cropped the pages and then blown them up to 150% to make the text more legible when you expand the page.  The actual text at the site is not this large at normal resolution and there’s a lot more white space on the page.

Specter for the Cure - 05-05-09 capture.

Now the FEC says you have to tell people that this is a fundraising solicitation. They say you have to do so by placement of a disclaimer which tells who the campaign is for and who paid for the solicitation. Here’s exactly what they say about that disclaimer:

How and Where must the Disclaimer Appear?

In order to give the reader sufficient notice about the person(s) paying for or authorizing a public communication regardless of its medium, the disclaimer notice must be “clear and conspicuous” on the committee’s communications, solicitations and response materials. The notice will not be considered to be “clear and conspicuous” if:

* It is difficult to read or hear; or
* The notification is placed where it can be easily overlooked.

11 CFR 110.11(c)(1).

Well, look at that page again. Look in the bottom left corner of the page. Would you call that “clear and conspicuous?” Would you not say that notice is pretty easy to overlook? Now, as Michelle Malkin pointed out, they will “point to the disclosures at the bottom of the “Donate Now” page (which you have to click through on the front page to access) as evidence of FEC compliance.” And it is pretty conspicuous there:

But, as Michelle noted, you have to click through the main page to even FIND that page. Michelle’s got a link to the FEC page on filing complaints.

I don’t even care about the disclaimer. I’m disgusted by the subtext. It clearly implies:

If you don’t vote for Arlen Specter, you don’t care about people who are ill!

Only Arlen Specter cares about curing diseases! “Washington politics” wants to KILL you!

Vote for Arlen Specter or you’ll DIE!

Disgusting

Exactly. And for that load of bullshit, I give Arlen Specter and anyone who supports him a big fat “Fuck You”.
